Automobile Department Inauguration

The Department of Automobile Engineering’s inauguration was held on September 4th 2019 at Rajam Hall and conducted by the student organizations, AEA, SAE, RAA. The programme presided over by our Dean, Dr T. Thyagarajan started around 9 30 am with the chief guest of the day being Mr P. Jayakumar, Head of Global Bus Ashok Leyland, Chennai. Other dignitaries included the current HOD Dr M. Senthil Kumar, former HODs Dr S. Jayaraj and Dr G. Devaradjane, president of AEA Dr K. Arunachalam, senior faculty advisor of SAE Mr B. Vasanthan and all the faculty members of Automobile Engineering.

The programme started with the ‘Tamizh Thaai Vaazhthu’ and Dr K. Arunachalam delivered the welcome address with warm words. Following which the HOD Dr M. Senthil Kumar gave a short presentation about the department that included the recent achievements of the department. The cherry on top was the ‘6-year accreditation by NBA’ and the newly constructed CEAT project.

An overview of the Automobile Engineers Association (AEA) was given by R. Roshan, the Chairman of AEA, and the history and achievements of the association were also mentioned. The plan for conducting this year’s symposiums was also elaborated. The overview of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Collegiate Club of MIT, achievements of the teams representing the department in various competitions like SUPRA, BAJA, FKDC etc and the plans for conducting academic classes for the year was given by M. Yuvaraj, the Chairman of SAE.

The Dean Dr T. Thyagarajan delivered the presidential address. His vibrant and energetic speech included the new anagram ‘TN Student, A VVIP’, which encouraged the students to practice values such as Travelling in unexplored paths, Nobility of thought, word and deed, Success-failure balance, Adaptation, Vision, Vigour, Innovation especially in ACE- Autonomous, Connected and Electric vehicles, Persistence and curiosity of the highest degree (Peraarvam).


Following a brief introduction about the chief guest by Mr B. Vasanthan, the chief guest delivered his address. Mr P. Jayakumar, the day’s chief guest is a proud alumnus of the same department of MIT. He has had an illustrious career in Ashok Leyland and has been the Project Head of various successful ventures of the institution. He delivered his address as a direct message to the student audience. He shared methods to students could follow to equip themselves to bridge the ‘gap between a graduate and the employer’ in today’s industrial scenario.

Mementoes were presented to the chief guest and the HOD after the programme. Mr Praveen Raj, Royal Alumni Association’s president (RAA) delivered the vote of thanks. The programme concluded around 11:30 am with the National Anthem.
